Happenings of Note

2019 Holliday MarketThe Holiday Market this year was the most successful we have ever had with over 70 local artisans, craftsmen, small businesses, live music, special art exhibits and demos, traveling choirs and of course, Santa! 2019 Tenant PotluckWe have never seen so many people join us for this event and we look forward to an even more successful event next year!

The end-of-the-year tenant potluck gathering for the Pajama Factory community included lots of great food and a chance for folks to meet more of their neighbors. It was a great way to end the year and to kick off 2019!

The 8th Annual Blues Bash event (held December 30th each year) was another huge draw to the Pajama Factory this holiday season. Produced by Enduring Star Productions and Pajama Factory, this fundraising concert benefited WXPI 88.5 Community Radio Station (a non-profit located in the building) and raised over $1100 for their ongoing programming. The event featured local talent Stacia Abernatha & Gabe Stillman, plus an Eric Clapton tribute with Sean Farley and David Lynn, Miss Melanie & the Valley Rats from State College, and the headliner, America’s oldest touring blues band, The Nighthawks. We even had a surprise visit and performance from Billy Price, 2016 Blues Music Award Winner and officially recognized and inducted as a Pittsburgh’s Rock ‘n Roll Legend. And a huge thanks to Curt Musheno and WXPI for publicizing the event, leading to increased ticket sales and to our MC of the evening, Rick Mason who also took the great pictures!

It’s hard to believe we’re midway through March but the good news is that we’ve had a few days that hint of warmer weather right around the corner! While we had been focused on outdoor building repairs prior to winter, we’ve recently been busy with construction inside. Our goal finish up our new studios this Spring along with updating the elevator and bringing new community spaces for our tenants. We have already pre-leased a number of the studios and rented out two residential apartments. We are keeping two additional apartments as AirBnBs to provide for short term stays right on the premises (hint hint to friends and family). We have made progress getting the refurbished elevator up and running; Todd Rice, an artist in the building, has been painting the inside of the elevator shaft which should make the ride a bit more interesting! We are also working towards the opening of a new sandwich shop (in the near future). So stay tuned!

Enrollment for our Artist-in-Residence program has opened (details below) as we continue to support this initiative that brings new artists, ideas and inspiration to our community. Please share this link with anyone you know who might be interested: air.pajamafactory.net.

Also, we are very excited about a TEDxWilliamsport event being hosted at the Pajama Factory on April 6th. Tickets just sold out and demonstrates how great the interest is for events like this in the future!

Hoping everyone survives the rest of winter as we look forward to the arrival of Spring!

In Focus: Rosie and Petunia

While Rosie has reigned as the official Pajama Factory pet for the last 4 years, Petunia is giving her a run for her money. Petunia spends most days running around in her ‘pajamas’ and sneaking empty water bottles from our office recycling bin! She and Rosie have become great friends and no doubt, you are likely to run into one of them in the courtyard or in the hallways.

Courtyard Activities

The courtyard is filled with flowers and we have had a number special events that take advantage of this great community space. Montage of courtyard pictures We are also very excited to have a new mural recently painted by Jesse Draxler—a world renowned artist out of LA, added in the courtyard. Jesse is a fine artist, illustrator, art director and designer whose art leverages deconstructed images that incorporate found photos, abstract painting, and design, often in black and white with obscured faces. The resulting pieces have been described as ‘dark and intriguing’. What do you think?

New construction600 sheets of sheetrock and over 1000 metal studs!…Our focus these days is the push to accelerate the development of the Pajama Factory. We are constructing 36 new studios on the 3rd and 4th floors — mostly smaller as we find that the smaller sizes are the most desirable. (If you’re interested we’re are starting a pre-lease program for these units. With a pre-lease, we allow you to reserve a unit by signing a pre-lease agreement and making a modest security deposit. This holds that particular unit in your name until it is move-in ready. You can get more information about pre-lease by emailing rentals@pajamafactory.net with your request and contact information.) ClearStory ligths Additionally, we are renovating bathrooms and creating four smaller residential units. We have also recently completed upgrades to the ClearStory events space with new air conditioning, heating and lighting (including programable colored mood lighting). The ClearStory can now host events throughout the year, not just during the temperate spring and fall seasons. We’ve also ordered wood to create a new gate for the courtyard (the work just starting), and planning is ongoing for a new entrance, gallery space, office space, conference rooms, elevator, parking lot and landscaping around everywhere. So much to do but so exciting to see all the changes!

The Factory Works Artist-in-Residence Program

Every year we host a variety of artists from outside the immediate Factory family to join us for the summer and work on their creative projects. We enjoy seeing what these artists bring to our community in the way of new vision, thinking, and ideas. “Close to Home” was the culmination and closing pop-up exhibition for this year’s program, and featured artist’s that all reside in and around Williamsport, Pennsylvania (a change from the many international visitors we have had in the past). 2018 AiR closing exhibition poster They were chosen to participate in this year’s program with the stated intention of creating work larger in scale and scope than their usual working space would allow. By creating works in mediums as varied as fibers, sculpture, painting and photography, they represent the diverse array of practices emblematic of the spirit the Pajama Factory Artist-In-Residence Program has embodied since it inception.

PJ Factory AirBnB

AirBnB at the Pajama Factory We set up an AirBnB in the building this summer and had incredible success with visitors signing up as they passed through Williamsport. We were booked most of June/July until our full time renter arrived in the building and moved into the furnished apartment (a young engineer moving to town from Texas). With this in mind, we are planning to build out at least another furnished apartment for short term stays as part of our current construction. (So don’t be afraid to come out for a visit as there will be a place in the building for all our friends.) Stay tuned!
